Portobello Baptist Church was planted in 1892 by a group of people with a desire to see a Baptist church established in this part of the city.

The current building was designed by David Bryce and built in 1863, as the Town Hall. This building is on the site of the first building in the area, built as Puerto Bello House in the late 1700s, on the area known as the Figgate Whins.

The Baptist Church moved in in 1919, and purchased the site in 1920. Today, more than 100 years later, their practices are rooted in a long history of faithful service and a commitment to reach out with the good news of Jesus.

The Church Hall, through to the rear of the building, was originally built to support a munitions effort during the great war, in Gretna Green, and was dismantled and moved to Portobello in 1924.
